🇻🇮Virgin Islands (US)

The United States Virgin Islands are a Caribbean territory of the United States, a trio of main islands known for sheltered harbours, historic Danish-era towns and protected natural beauty. A popular cruise and beach destination, they combine American governance with deep Caribbean character. The capital, Charlotte Amalie, sits on St. Thomas.

The territory centres on three main islands: St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix, along with many smaller cays. The islands are largely hilly and green, and much of St. John is protected within a US national park. The climate is warm and tropical year-round.

Culture in the islands fuses African, Danish, American and wider Caribbean influences, heard in quelbe and calypso music and seen in lively carnival celebrations. Local cuisine, craft traditions and a strong sense of community shape daily life, while tourism dominates the economy.

Originally home to Indigenous peoples, the islands were colonised by Denmark and developed through sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans. The United States purchased them from Denmark in 1917 for their strategic position, and residents are US citizens, though the islands remain an unincorporated territory.
