🇻🇬Virgin Islands (British)

The British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean, a cluster of islands and cays celebrated as one of the world's premier sailing destinations. Calm, protected waters and a string of scenic anchorages draw yachts from around the globe. The capital, Road Town, lies on the main island of Tortola.

The territory comprises around 60 islands and islets, of which the main inhabited ones are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Most are hilly and volcanic, except for the flat coral island of Anegada with its surrounding reef. The climate is tropical and tempered by trade winds.

Island life blends African and British Caribbean heritage, with a strong maritime and sailing culture. Music such as fungi and calypso, local cuisine and an annual Emancipation Festival are central to community life, while tourism and offshore finance underpin the economy.

Settled by Indigenous peoples and later contested by European powers, the islands came under British control and developed through sugar plantations. They remain a British Overseas Territory, using the US dollar and prospering as a yachting hub and a major centre for international company registration.
