Antigua and Barbuda is a twin-island nation in the eastern Caribbean, famed for its turquoise waters and the boast of having a beach for every day of the year. A sovereign state within the Commonwealth, it pairs a relaxed island pace with a vibrant sailing and tourism economy. Its capital, St. John's, sits on the larger island of Antigua.

The country comprises two main islands, Antigua and the smaller, flatter Barbuda, along with the tiny island of Redonda. Antigua is known for its deeply indented coastline of natural harbours and coral-fringed bays, while Barbuda is a low-lying haven for frigatebirds. The climate is tropical, warm and breezy year-round, with a hurricane season in the late summer and autumn.

Antiguan and Barbudan culture blends African, British and Caribbean influences, expressed through calypso and soca music, cricket, and an exuberant summer Carnival. Cricket is a national passion, and the islands have produced some of the West Indies' finest players. Food, festivals and a strong seafaring tradition shape daily life.

Inhabited for millennia by Arawak and Carib peoples, the islands were colonised by the English in the 17th century and developed around sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans. Antigua and Barbuda gained full independence from the United Kingdom in 1981 while remaining a Commonwealth realm.
