Martinique is an island located in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea and an overseas region and department of France. It offers a distinctive blend of French and Caribbean cultures, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and language.

The island covers about 1126 square kilometers. It is dominated by the towering volcanic mountain, Mount Pelée, which rises 1297 meters and last erupted in 1902. Martinique features lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and white-sand bays. The climate is tropical, with a dry season from January to June and a wet season from July to December.

French is the official language, but many residents speak Martinican Creole. The island’s cuisine fuses French techniques with Caribbean spices, producing dishes such as accras, bouillon, and teoule. Annual celebrations include the vibrant Carnival, the Maré Hado music festival, and the traditional parade of the Compagnie des Maîtres d’Entreprises.

The French first claimed Martinique in 1635 and established a plantation economy based on sugarcane and slave labor. The island has been influenced by African, Indigenous, and European cultures. In 1946 it became an overseas department of France, granting its residents full French citizenship. Martinique’s history is marked by a strong tradition of artistic expression and political activism.
