Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea.

The island is mountainous, with the Cordillera Central forming the mountainous backbone. The highest peak is Cerro de Punta.

Puerto Rican culture is a vibrant mix of Taíno, Spanish, African, and American influences, evident in its music, dance, cuisine, and festivals.

Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, Puerto Rico was claimed by Christopher Columbus for Spain in 1493. It became a US territory in 1898 following the Spanish-American War.
