Montserrat is a small British overseas territory located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, about 80 km north of Dominica. With a population of roughly 4,400 (as of 2023), it is one of the world’s smallest territories and the only one with a predominantly volcanic landscape.

The island covers an area of 102 km² and is dominated by the Soufrière Hills volcano, which erupted in 1997 and has caused the evacuation of the entire population from the western side. Montserrat’s beaches are lined by tropical rainforest and coral reefs, while its capital, Plymouth, was abandoned after the eruption.

Montserrat’s culture blends British colonial heritage with Caribbean traditions. English is the official language, and the population practices Christianity, especially Protestant denominations. Folk music, calypso, and the local ‘Mountainous’ dance festivals showcase a syncretic musical heritage.

Montserrat was first settled by the Spanish in the 16th century and later became a British colony in 1718. It played a minor role in the 19th‑century slave trade era. The most transformative event was the 1997 eruption of the Soufrière Hills, which displaced the entire population and led to a permanent settlement in the eastern part of the island. The constitution now ties Montserrat closely to the United Kingdom while granting internal self‑governance.
