Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, is the world's fourth-largest island located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. With a population of over 26 million, it is known for its unique biodiversity, distinctive cultures, and vibrant arts.

The country spans nearly 587,000 square kilometers, comprising the island itself and several smaller islands. It features diverse landscapes: tropical rainforests in the east, dry deciduous forests in the west, and desert-like spiny forests in the south. The capital, Antananarivo, sits at an altitude of about 1,200 meters.

Madagascar's culture reflects influences from African, Southeast Asian, Arab, French, and Chinese traditions. It is renowned for its music (e.g., salegy and traditional rondabe), dance, craftsmanship, and the iconic malagasy language, which has many dialects. The annual Famadihana (turning of the bones) ritual and the Day of the Madagascar Independence are notable cultural events.

The island was first settled around 2,000 years ago by Austronesian fishermen, later joined by Bantu-speaking peoples. It became a French colony in 1897 and fought for independence, achieved in 1960. Since independence, Madagascar has experienced periods of political instability, economic challenges, and social change.
