Zimbabwe is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa, a land of dramatic landscapes, ancient stone cities and abundant wildlife. It is home to one half of the mighty Victoria Falls and to the medieval ruins that gave the country its name. Rich in heritage and natural beauty, it has weathered decades of economic turbulence.

Zimbabwe sits on a high central plateau, the highveld, flanked by lower terrain and bordered by the Zambezi River to the north and the Limpopo to the south. The Zambezi plunges over Victoria Falls on the Zambian border, and Lake Kariba, one of the world's largest reservoirs, lies to the northwest. The climate is subtropical, moderated by altitude.

The majority Shona and Ndebele peoples shape the nation's languages and traditions, expressed in mbira thumb-piano music, renowned stone sculpture, and strong oral and craft heritage. Family, community and respect for ancestors are central values, and the country has a rich tradition of literature and art.

The stone city of Great Zimbabwe, capital of a powerful medieval trading kingdom, gives the country its name. Colonised as Rhodesia, the territory gained majority-rule independence in 1980 under Robert Mugabe. Subsequent land reforms and economic crises led to severe hyperinflation in the late 2000s.
