Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is the most easterly of the African countries and its landmass lies along the southern boundary of the Guardafui Channel and the Gulf of Aden.

The country's coastline is 3,025 kilometers (1,880 miles) long, the longest of any country in mainland Africa. Somalia's terrain consists mainly of plains, with plateaus in the north and more rugged hills and mountains in the north.

Somali culture is a rich blend of indigenous African traditions and influences from Arab, Persian, and European cultures. The Somali people are known for their poetic traditions, music, and hospitality. Islam plays a central role in Somali life.

The history of Somalia is marked by various sultanates and coastal trading cities that flourished from the medieval period onwards. It experienced periods of colonial rule by Britain and Italy. After gaining independence in 1960, the nation has faced significant political challenges, including civil war and periods of instability.
