The United Kingdom is an island nation off the northwestern coast of mainland Europe, made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A global power for centuries, it shaped the modern world through its empire, the Industrial Revolution, the English language and parliamentary democracy. Its capital, London, is one of the world's leading financial and cultural centres.

The UK occupies most of the British Isles, comprising the island of Great Britain, the northeastern part of the island of Ireland, and many smaller islands. Its landscapes range from the rolling lowlands of England to the Scottish Highlands, the Welsh mountains and a long, varied coastline. The climate is temperate and famously changeable.

British culture has had a worldwide influence, from the works of Shakespeare and the traditions of common law to the Beatles and the Premier League. The four nations each retain distinct identities, languages and customs, united by institutions such as the monarchy, the BBC and a deep-rooted love of tea, pubs and football.

Shaped by Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman influences, the kingdoms of the islands gradually united, with the United Kingdom forming through acts of union by the early 19th century. It built the largest empire in history, led the Industrial Revolution, played a decisive role in both World Wars, and left the European Union in 2020.
