Sweden is a Nordic nation in northern Europe known for its forests and lakes, progressive society, and outsized cultural influence from design to music. The largest of the Scandinavian countries, it combines a high standard of living with a deep connection to nature captured in the tradition of allemansratten, the right to roam. Its capital, Stockholm, is built across fourteen islands.

Stretching far to the north, Sweden runs from the temperate, fertile south to the subarctic wilderness of Lapland, where the midnight sun shines in summer and the northern lights glow in winter. The country is covered in vast forests and dotted with tens of thousands of lakes, and its long Baltic coastline is fringed by countless islands.

Swedish culture prizes equality, consensus and a balanced way of life, embodied in the concept of lagom, meaning just the right amount. The country has shaped global pop music, design and literature, and cherishes seasonal traditions such as Midsummer and the cosy ritual of fika, a coffee-and-pastry break. Social welfare and environmental awareness are deeply rooted values.

Home to the seafaring Norse in the Viking Age, Sweden grew into a major European power in the 17th century before adopting a long policy of neutrality that lasted through both World Wars. In modern times it built a celebrated social-democratic welfare state, joined the European Union in 1995, and in 2024 became a member of NATO.
