Wales
An Unitary authority in United Kingdom
About Wales
Wales is a constituent country of the United Kingdom on the western side of Great Britain, celebrated for its mountainous landscapes, castles and living Celtic language. Its capital is Cardiff. With a proud cultural identity, Wales maintains the Welsh language alongside English and has its own devolved government.
Wales is largely mountainous, dominated by the peaks of Eryri, also known as Snowdonia, and the Brecon Beacons, with a long, scenic coastline and the valleys of the south. The highest peak is Snowdon. The climate is mild, wet and maritime.
Welsh culture is rich in music, poetry and song, famous for male voice choirs, the Eisteddfod festival, and a deep attachment to the Welsh language. Rugby is the national sport, and the country has more castles per square mile than almost anywhere on Earth.
Home to the Celtic Britons, Wales was conquered by England in the 13th century under Edward I, who built a ring of great castles. Fully incorporated into the kingdom in the 16th century, it retained its language and culture and gained a devolved assembly, now the Senedd, in 1999.
