North Macedonia, officially the Republic of North Macedonia, is a country in Southeast Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. It is a landlocked country, bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. The country gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

The terrain of North Macedonia is primarily mountainous, with deep valleys and basins. The Vardar River is the longest and most important river in the country, running through the heart of North Macedonia. The country has numerous lakes, the most famous being Lake Ohrid, which is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

North Macedonia boasts a rich cultural heritage influenced by centuries of history and various civilizations. Traditional folk music and dance are prominent, often featuring instruments like the kaval and tapan. The territory of North Macedonia has a long and complex history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. It was part of the ancient Kingdom of Paeonia, the Roman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the First Bulgarian Empire, followed by periods of Byzantine and Serbian rule. The region came under Ottoman rule for over 500 years before being incorporated into Yugoslavia after World War I. Following a peaceful referendum in 1991, it declared independence, initially as the Republic of Macedonia, and in 2019, the country officially changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia following an agreement with Greece.
