About Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a heart-shaped country in the western Balkans of Southeast Europe, where the architecture of empires and faiths meets in a single skyline. Its capital, Sarajevo, famously sits at a crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. Mountainous and richly historic, the country is steadily rebuilding and opening to travellers drawn by its dramatic landscapes and layered heritage.
Most of the country is mountainous, part of the Dinaric Alps, with deep river valleys, karst plateaus and dense forests. Herzegovina, the southern region, is warmer and more Mediterranean, while the north and central highlands are cooler and greener. The country has only a short stretch of Adriatic coastline around the town of Neum.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is celebrated for its cultural and religious diversity, home to Bosniak, Serb and Croat communities and to Islamic, Orthodox, Catholic and Jewish traditions that have coexisted for centuries. This blend is visible in its cuisine, music and the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture of cities like Sarajevo and Mostar.
The region was ruled for centuries by the Ottoman Empire and then by Austria-Hungary, whose tensions helped spark the First World War in Sarajevo in 1914. Part of Yugoslavia for much of the 20th century, the country declared independence in 1992 and endured a devastating war before the 1995 Dayton Agreement established its current federal structure.
