Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country located in South Asia. It is mainly situated in the Himalayas but also includes parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Nepal is the 49th largest country by land area and the 41st largest by population.

Nepal is characterized by its dramatic variations in topography, ranging from the Terai lowlands in the south to the high peaks of the Himalayas in the north. Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet, China. The country is divided into three main geographical regions: the Mountain region, the Hill region, and the Terai region.

Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multicultural country. Nepali is the official language, but many other languages are spoken. Hinduism is the largest religion, followed by Buddhism. The country boasts numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting its rich cultural and historical heritage, including temples, stupas, and ancient palaces.

Nepal has a long and complex history, with records of civilization dating back thousands of years. It was historically known as the Kingdom of Nepal. The country unified under the Shah dynasty in the mid-18th century. Nepal transitioned from a monarchy to a republic in 2008.
