Uruguay is a small, progressive nation on the southeastern coast of South America, wedged between Brazil and Argentina along the Atlantic. Known for its political stability, social liberalism and gentle rolling countryside, it enjoys one of the highest qualities of life in the region. Its capital, Montevideo, is a relaxed coastal city of faded grandeur and seaside promenades.

Uruguay is a land of low rolling plains and grasslands, the cuchillas, ideal for cattle ranching, with a long Atlantic and River Plate coastline of beaches and lagoons. It has no mountains of note and a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The Uruguay River forms its western border.

Uruguayan culture revolves around the gaucho ranching tradition, the shared ritual of drinking mate, and a deep national passion for football. Tango and candombe music, an asado barbecue culture, and a famously secular, easygoing society all shape daily life. Education and the arts are highly valued.

Once contested between Spanish and Portuguese empires, Uruguay became independent in 1828 as a buffer state between its larger neighbours. The 20th century saw it build an early and generous welfare state. In recent decades it has gained international attention for pioneering social reforms, including legalising cannabis nationally.
