South Georgia, officially South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It lies about 1,400 km (870 mi) east of the Falkland Islands.

The territory is an archipelago of volcanic and glacier-covered islands. South Georgia itself is the largest island, dominated by the imposing peaks of the Allardyce Range. The islands are remote, rugged, and experience harsh weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy snowfall, and frequent rain.

There is no indigenous population on South Georgia; however, there is a small, rotating scientific and support staff stationed at research bases like King Edward Point and Bird Island. The culture is largely defined by the scientific endeavor, wildlife conservation, and the historical legacy of whaling stations.

South Georgia was first sighted by the English explorer John Narborough in 1675. It was later claimed by Captain James Cook in 1775, who named it 'South Georgia' in honor of King George III. The islands were a significant hub for sealing and whaling in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The abandoned whaling station at Grytviken serves as a museum and a stark reminder of this era. The territory was involved in the Falklands War in 1982.
