Ukraine is the largest country wholly within Europe, a nation of fertile plains and deep cultural heritage in Eastern Europe. Long known as the breadbasket of Europe for its rich black soil, it has a proud history and a strong sense of national identity. Its capital, Kyiv, is one of the oldest and most historic cities of Eastern Europe.

Ukraine is dominated by vast, fertile steppes and plains drained by the Dnieper River, with the Carpathian Mountains in the west and a long Black Sea coastline to the south. Its exceptionally rich chernozem soils make it one of the world's foremost agricultural producers. The climate is mostly temperate continental.

Ukrainian culture is expressed through its language, Orthodox and Greek Catholic traditions, embroidered vyshyvanka shirts, pysanka decorated eggs, and a celebrated tradition of folk music and dance. Literature, hospitality and a strong attachment to land and family are central to national life.

Kyivan Rus, centred on Kyiv, was a powerful medieval state and a cradle of East Slavic civilisation. Later divided among empires and incorporated into the Soviet Union, Ukraine became independent in 1991. Since 2014, and especially after the full-scale invasion of 2022, it has been at the centre of a major war with Russia.
