Slovakia, officially the Slovak Republic, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the west, and the Czech Republic to the northwest.

Slovakia's landscape is diverse, featuring the Tatra Mountains, part of the Carpathians, in the north, with the highest peak, Lomnický štít. The southern part is characterized by the fertile Danubian Lowland. Major rivers include the Danube, Váh, and Hron.

Slovak culture is a blend of Slavic traditions with influences from neighboring countries. Folk music, dance, and costumes are prominent. The country has a rich heritage of castles and historical towns. Cuisine is hearty, often featuring bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon).

Slovakia's history is closely intertwined with that of the Czech Republic, being part of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1992. It was part of the Great Moravian Empire in the 9th century and later under Hungarian rule for centuries. Slovakia peacefully dissolved Czechoslovakia, becoming an independent nation on January 1, 1993.
