Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, officially known as the Republic of Sierra Leone. It is bordered by Guinea to the north, Liberia to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest.

The country has a varied topography, including mountains, savannah, and coastal plains. The highest point is Mount Bintumani in the Loma Mountains. Sierra Leone has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.

Sierra Leone is ethnically diverse, with several major ethnic groups including the Mende, Themne, Krio, and Limba. The Krio people, descendants of freed slaves from North America and the Caribbean, have significantly influenced the country's culture and politics. Traditional music, dance, and storytelling remain important cultural expressions.

Sierra Leone was founded as a colony in 1787 by freed slaves from Britain. It became a British Crown Colony in 1808. Independence was gained on April 27, 1961. The country endured a brutal civil war from 1991 to 2002, which left a lasting impact.
