San Luis Potosí

San Luis Potosi is a state in north-central Mexico with a rich mining heritage and remarkably varied landscapes. Its capital is also called San Luis Potosi, a colonial city with a UNESCO-listed historic center. From desert plateaus to the lush Huasteca Potosina, it offers striking natural and cultural diversity.

The state ranges from the arid central plateau and desert in the west to the green, waterfall-rich Huasteca Potosina in the humid east, where the Sierra Madre Oriental descends to the Gulf lowlands. The climate ranges from desert to tropical.

San Luis Potosi blends colonial mining heritage with Huastec Indigenous culture in the east. Its capital is known for fine plazas and churches, and the Huasteca region for its turquoise rivers, waterfalls and folk traditions.

A major silver-mining center in the colonial era, the city of San Luis Potosi gave its name to a political plan that helped launch the Mexican Revolution in 1910. It became a state in 1824.
