Estado de México

A State in Mexico

About Estado de México

The State of Mexico, or Estado de Mexico, is the most populous state in the country, wrapping around much of Mexico City. Its capital is Toluca. Densely populated and industrialised, it contains both sprawling metropolitan suburbs and the awe-inspiring ancient city of Teotihuacan.

The state surrounds Mexico City on three sides, occupying high valleys and volcanic mountains in central Mexico, including the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Much of it lies above 2,000 metres. The climate is temperate highland.

Its culture blends the urban life of the Mexico City metropolitan area with traditional towns, Indigenous Mazahua and Otomi communities, and important archaeological heritage. Teotihuacan is a focal point of national identity.

Home to Teotihuacan, one of the largest cities of the ancient Americas, and later central to the Aztec world, the state has been a population center for millennia. It is the most populous of Mexico's federal states.
