Guerrero

Guerrero is a state on the Pacific coast of southern Mexico, home to the famous resort of Acapulco and the silver town of Taxco. Its capital is Chilpancingo. A region of beaches, mountains and rich Indigenous heritage, it blends tourism with rugged natural beauty.

Guerrero rises from a long Pacific coastline of bays and beaches up through the steep Sierra Madre del Sur to interior valleys. The terrain is mountainous and rugged. The climate is tropical on the coast and cooler in the highlands.

The state has a vibrant coastal and Indigenous culture, with Afro-Mexican communities on the Costa Chica, traditional crafts, and the lacquerware and silverwork of Taxco. Acapulco shaped Mexico's mid-20th-century glamour.

Named after independence hero Vicente Guerrero, the state was formed in 1849. Acapulco was a key colonial port linking Mexico with Asia via the Manila galleon trade, and later became a world-famous beach resort.
