Aguascalientes

Aguascalientes is a small state in central Mexico known for its temperate climate, industry and the famous San Marcos National Fair. Its capital, also called Aguascalientes, is the economic and cultural center. Despite its compact size, it is one of Mexico's most prosperous and fastest-growing states.

Aguascalientes lies on the central highland plateau of Mexico, a region of semi-arid plains and gentle hills crossed by the San Pedro River. Its name means hot waters, after its thermal springs. The climate is temperate and dry.

The state is famous for the San Marcos Fair, one of the largest and oldest festivals in Mexico, along with traditions of charreria, embroidery and the engravings of artist Jose Guadalupe Posada. It has a strong regional identity.

Once part of a larger region and a silver-mining and ranching area, Aguascalientes became a separate state in 1857. In modern times it has grown into a major automotive and manufacturing center.
