Coahuila de Zaragoza

Coahuila, officially Coahuila de Zaragoza, is a large state in northern Mexico on the US border, known for its deserts, industry and dinosaur fossils. Its capital is Saltillo. A major center of automotive manufacturing and mining, it combines economic strength with vast arid landscapes.

Coahuila is dominated by the Chihuahuan Desert, with mountain ranges, canyons and the surprising desert wetlands of Cuatro Cienegas, home to unique species. It borders Texas along the Rio Grande. The climate is mostly arid with hot summers and cool winters.

The state has a strong northern ranching and industrial culture, with norteno music, hearty cuisine and a heritage of mining and steel. Saltillo is known for its colonial center and traditional sarape textiles.

Once linked with Texas as a single state before Texan independence, Coahuila was a frontier of ranching and mining. A cradle of the Mexican Revolution, it became an industrial powerhouse in the modern era.
