Morelos

Morelos is a small state just south of Mexico City, blessed with a mild climate that gives its capital, Cuernavaca, the nickname city of eternal spring. A popular weekend escape for the capital, it is rich in pre-Hispanic sites, colonial towns and revolutionary history.

Morelos descends from the high volcanic mountains bordering Mexico City to warmer valleys and lowlands, with a pleasant year-round climate. It is compact, fertile and green, watered by mountain streams.

The state blends colonial heritage, Nahua Indigenous traditions and a relaxed resort atmosphere, with the mystical town of Tepoztlan, ancient pyramids and the legacy of revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata, a local hero.

Home to the pre-Hispanic site of Xochicalco and a center of sugar plantations in colonial times, Morelos was the heartland of Emiliano Zapata's agrarian movement during the Mexican Revolution. It became a state in 1869.
