🇧🇳Brunei

Nestled on the northern coast of Borneo, Brunei Darussalam is a small yet affluent sultanate famed for its pristine rainforests, opulent mosques, and a deep-rooted blend of Malay tradition and modern prosperity.

Brunei comprises two main landmasses divided by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, covering roughly 5,765 square kilometers of lowland rainforests, mangrove swamps, and the sparkling waters of the South China Sea. Its terrain is gently rolling, rising toward the interior highlands where the country’s iconic Ulu Temburong National Park protects some of the oldest tropical forest in the region.

The cultural tapestry of Brunei intertwines Malay customs, Islamic principles, and influences from Chinese and indigenous Iban communities. Traditional arts such as silat (martial arts), batik weaving, and the graceful dances of the Brunei Malay court are celebrated alongside a vibrant culinary scene featuring dishes like ambuyat (sago-based broth) and nasi lemak, all enjoyed in the shadow of splendid Islamic architecture like the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.

In 1888 Brunei became a British protectorate, a status that lasted until full independence on 1 January 1984, making it one of the youngest nations in Southeast Asia. The discovery of vast offshore oil and gas reserves in the 1920s transformed the sultanate’s economy, underpinning its modern wealth while allowing the monarchy to preserve cultural heritage and invest heavily in education and infrastructure.
