Panama is a transcontinental country connecting Central America with South America. It is renowned for the Panama Canal, a vital waterway that allows ships to travel between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, significantly reducing travel time and cost.

Located on the Isthmus of Panama, the country is bordered by Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east. Its diverse geography includes lush rainforests, volcanic mountain ranges, and extensive coastlines along both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The Panama Canal is its most prominent geographical feature.

Panamanian culture is a rich blend of indigenous, Spanish, African, and North American influences. This is reflected in its music, dance, cuisine, and festivals. Traditional music often features maracas and drums, while cuisine includes dishes like sancocho (a hearty soup) and gallo pinto (rice and beans).

Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, Panama was colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century and remained under Spanish rule until 1821 when it joined Gran Colombia. Panama declared its independence from Colombia in 1903, with the United States playing a significant role in facilitating this separation and the subsequent construction of the Panama Canal. The US returned control of the canal to Panama in 1999.
