Mizoram

Mizoram is a mountainous state in the far northeast of India, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, known for its rolling green hills and close-knit, predominantly Christian society. Its capital is Aizawl. One of India's most literate and peaceful states, it has a strong sense of community.

Mizoram is a land of steep north-south hill ranges covered in bamboo and forest, cut by river valleys, with a cool, pleasant climate moderated by altitude and a heavy monsoon. Much of the population lives on hilltop settlements.

Mizo culture is strongly community-oriented and overwhelmingly Christian, with a rich tradition of song, dance such as the bamboo dance, and festivals tied to the agricultural cycle. Hospitality and social cohesion are highly valued.

Home to the Mizo people, who migrated from the east over centuries, the region was administered as the Lushai Hills under the British. After a long insurgency that ended in a 1986 peace accord, Mizoram became a full Indian state in 1987.
