Assam

Assam is a state in northeastern India, the gateway to the region, famous worldwide for its tea and the mighty Brahmaputra River. Its capital is Dispur, within the largest city Guwahati. Lush and green, it is renowned for wildlife, including the one-horned rhinoceros.

Assam is centered on the broad valley of the Brahmaputra River, flanked by hills, with fertile floodplains that flood heavily during the monsoon. Tea gardens blanket much of the land. The climate is humid subtropical with very heavy rainfall.

Assamese culture blends numerous communities and is known for the Bihu festivals, silk weaving, and a rich tradition of music and dance. Tea is central to its identity and economy, and the region has a distinct cuisine and heritage.

Ruled for six centuries by the Ahom dynasty, which resisted Mughal expansion, Assam came under British control in the 19th century and became a global tea producer. It is now a key state of India's northeast.
