Haryana
A State in India
About Haryana
Haryana is a northern Indian state that surrounds the national capital, Delhi, on three sides and forms part of its booming metropolitan region. Its capital is the shared city of Chandigarh, while Faridabad and the tech hub of Gurugram are its largest cities. It is a leader in agriculture and modern industry.
Haryana is largely flat, fertile plain, part of the Indo-Gangetic and Indus basins, with the Yamuna River along its eastern edge and the Aravalli hills to the south. The climate is continental, with very hot summers and cool winters.
Haryanvi culture is rooted in agriculture, rural traditions and a strong sporting heritage, producing many of India's top wrestlers and athletes. Folk music, hearty cuisine and close-knit communities define its character.
The region was the setting of the legendary Kurukshetra war of the Mahabharata and many decisive battles in Indian history. Carved from Punjab on linguistic lines in 1966, Haryana has since become one of India's most economically dynamic states.
