Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is a large state in central India, often called the heart of India for its central location. Its capital is Bhopal, while Indore is the largest city. Rich in forests, wildlife and ancient monuments, it is a leading destination for tiger safaris and heritage tourism.

Madhya Pradesh occupies a vast plateau crossed by the Vindhya and Satpura ranges and the Narmada River, with extensive forests covering much of the state. It is India's second-largest state by area. The climate is subtropical, hot in summer with a monsoon.

The state has a deep cultural heritage, home to the erotic temple sculptures of Khajuraho, the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi, and many tribal communities with rich folk traditions. It blends classical Hindu, Buddhist and Jain heritage.

Site of ancient cities and dynasties, the region holds some of India's most important historic monuments. Formed in 1956 and reshaped when Chhattisgarh split off in 2000, it remains central to India geographically and culturally.
