🇼🇫Wallis and Futuna Islands

Wallis and Futuna is a remote French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific, made up of two small island groups deep in Polynesia. One of the most isolated French territories, it preserves strong traditional Polynesian customs and kingdoms alongside French administration. Its main settlement, Mata Utu, lies on the island of Wallis.

The territory consists of the island of Wallis and, about 230 kilometres away, the islands of Futuna and Alofi. Wallis is a low volcanic island ringed by a lagoon and reef, while Futuna is more rugged and mountainous. The climate is hot and humid, tropical throughout the year.

Wallis and Futuna is notable for retaining customary Polynesian monarchies, with traditional kings holding authority alongside the French state. Catholicism is deeply woven into island life, and ceremony, kava, dance and communal village living remain central. Wallisian and Futunan languages are widely spoken.

Settled by Polynesians and later visited by European explorers and missionaries, the islands embraced Catholicism in the 19th century and became a French protectorate. In 1961 they voted to become a French overseas territory, a status that preserves both French citizenship and their traditional kingdoms.
