Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa, a Mediterranean nation where ancient Carthage once rivalled Rome. Compact and diverse, it blends golden beaches, Roman ruins and the edge of the Sahara within a few hours' drive. Its capital, Tunis, overlooks the gulf where one of antiquity's great cities stood.

Tunisia stretches from a fertile, well-watered north along the Mediterranean coast to the arid steppes and dunes of the Sahara in the south. The Atlas Mountains reach into the northwest, while salt lakes and date-palm oases mark the desert interior. The north has a mild Mediterranean climate; the south is hot and dry.

Tunisian identity weaves together Berber, Arab, Mediterranean and French threads, with Arabic the official language and French widely spoken. The country is known for its mosaics, handicrafts, couscous-based cuisine and a relatively liberal social tradition within the Arab world. Historic medinas and Roman sites are central to its heritage.

Founded by the Phoenicians as Carthage, the region became a Roman province after the Punic Wars, later passing through Arab, Ottoman and French rule. Tunisia gained independence from France in 1956, and in 2011 the self-immolation of a street vendor sparked a revolution that toppled its government and ignited the wider Arab Spring.
