Palau is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago consisting of about 343 islands, forming the western chain of the Caroline Islands. Known for its pristine coral reefs and marine biodiversity, Palau is a popular destination for diving and snorkeling.

Palau is situated in Micronesia, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of the Philippines. The main islands include Babeldaob, Koror, Peleliu, and Angaur. Babeldaob is the largest island and is home to the country's highest point, Mount Ngerchelchuus. The islands are volcanic and limestone in origin, surrounded by coral reefs and lagoons.

Palauan culture is a blend of indigenous traditions and influences from past colonial powers. The society is organized around clans and matrilineal descent. The bai, a traditional meeting house, is a significant cultural symbol. Palauan music and dance are also important aspects of their cultural heritage.

Palau was first settled by Austronesian peoples thousands of years ago. It was later visited by Europeans and came under Spanish, German, and Japanese rule. After World War II, it became part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States. Palau gained full independence in 1994.
