Botswana is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa widely regarded as one of the continent's great conservation and stability success stories. Dominated by the Kalahari Desert yet home to the lush Okavango Delta, it offers some of the finest wildlife experiences on Earth. Stable, democratic and diamond-rich, it has transformed from one of the world's poorest countries at independence into a middle-income state.

Much of Botswana is covered by the sands of the Kalahari, a vast semi-arid savanna. In the north, the Okavango River spills into the desert to form the Okavango Delta, a sprawling inland wetland teeming with wildlife, while the Makgadikgadi salt pans stretch across the northeast. The climate is largely hot and dry.

The majority Tswana people give the country its language, Setswana, and its strong traditions of community consultation through gatherings known as kgotla. Botswana is known for its peaceful, conservative society, its respect for elders, and a national pride rooted in democratic governance and wildlife stewardship.

Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana gained independence in 1966 under founding president Seretse Khama. The subsequent discovery of large diamond deposits funded rapid development, and the country has maintained an unbroken record of multiparty democracy and prudent economic management ever since.
