Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by eight countries. The capital city, Lusaka, is a bustling hub for commerce and politics. With an estimated population of about 18 million people, Zambia is a diverse nation with a growing economy centered around mining, agriculture, and tourism.

The country sits largely on the Great Rift Valley plateau, featuring a mix of highlands, lowlands, and fertile valleys. The mighty Zambezi River flows through the north, giving rise to the world-famous Victoria Falls, while the Chambeshi River feeds into the Congo basin. Zambia's climate ranges from tropical wet and dry in the south to more temperate conditions in the high plateau, with average temperatures between 18°C and 25°C and two distinct wet seasons.

Zambia is home to over 70 Bantu and non-Bantu languages, with Bemba, Nyanja, and Tonga among the most widely spoken. Music and dance are central to cultural identity, ranging from traditional drum ensembles (mashingwawa) to modern Zamrock. Community values emphasize cooperation, respect for elders, and the importance of family. Christianity is the predominant religion, while traditional spiritual beliefs and practices continue to play a significant role in daily life.

Before colonial rule, Zambian territory was inhabited by various kingdoms, including Barotseland, which maintained a degree of autonomy. In 1891 Britain established the Protectorate of Northern Rhodesia, later merging it into the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Zambia gained independence on 24 October 1964, with Kenneth Kaunda becoming the first president. Over the decades, the country has navigated post-independence challenges, from one-party rule to democratic transitions and economic reforms.
