Wyoming

Wyoming is a western US state in the Rocky Mountains and high plains, the least populous state in the country, famed for Yellowstone, the world's first national park. Its capital and largest city is Cheyenne. Nicknamed the Equality State, it was the first to grant women the right to vote.

Wyoming is high and rugged, with the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Tetons and the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone in the northwest, giving way to high plains and basins elsewhere. It has the second-highest mean elevation of any state. The climate is dry and continental.

Wyoming culture is defined by ranching, rodeo and a fierce frontier independence, with Cheyenne Frontier Days a celebrated event. Wide-open spaces, energy production and outdoor recreation shape daily life.

Home to the Shoshone, Arapaho and other peoples, Wyoming granted women's suffrage in 1869, decades before the nation, earning its Equality State nickname. It became the 44th state in 1890, built on cattle, railroads, coal, oil and gas.
