Connecticut

Connecticut is a small but affluent state in New England in the northeastern United States, blending colonial history with a modern economy. Its capital is Hartford, long a center of the insurance industry, while Bridgeport is the largest city. Nicknamed the Constitution State, it lies within commuting distance of New York City.

Connecticut is compact and varied, with a Long Island Sound shoreline, rolling hills, river valleys and dense woodlands. The Connecticut River bisects the state from north to south. The climate is humid continental, with four distinct seasons.

Connecticut combines New England tradition with proximity to New York, reflected in its historic towns, prestigious universities such as Yale in New Haven, and a strong cultural and culinary scene. It is known for its colonial heritage and high standard of living.

One of the original Thirteen Colonies, Connecticut adopted the Fundamental Orders in 1639, sometimes called the first written constitution, and became the 5th state in 1788. It industrialized early, becoming a hub of manufacturing, insurance and finance.
