Rhode Island

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States by area, set on Narragansett Bay in New England, yet rich in coastline, history and charm. Its capital and largest city is Providence. Nicknamed the Ocean State, it was a pioneer of religious freedom and the first colony to declare independence from Britain.

Despite its tiny size, Rhode Island has a deeply indented coastline of bays, inlets and islands, with hundreds of miles of shoreline along Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic. The terrain is low and gently rolling. The climate is humid continental, moderated by the sea.

Rhode Island culture is tied to the sea, with sailing, seafood and the Gilded Age mansions of Newport. Providence offers a lively arts and food scene, and the state has a strong Italian American and maritime heritage.

Founded by Roger Williams in 1636 as a refuge for religious dissenters, Rhode Island championed tolerance and was the first colony to renounce allegiance to Britain in 1776. It was the last of the original thirteen to ratify the Constitution, becoming the 13th state in 1790.
