Ohio

Ohio is a Midwestern US state and a longtime bellwether in national politics, blending industry, agriculture and major cities. Its capital and largest city is Columbus, with Cleveland and Cincinnati anchoring other large metro areas. Nicknamed the Buckeye State, it has produced numerous US presidents and astronauts.

Ohio ranges from the Lake Erie shore and flat northwestern plains to the rolling Appalachian foothills in the southeast, with the Ohio River forming its southern border. The land is largely fertile and well-watered. The climate is humid continental.

Ohio culture is rooted in manufacturing heritage, passionate college and pro sports, and a Midwestern character. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and a strong tradition of innovation, from aviation to space, are sources of pride.

Home to Indigenous peoples and shaped by the Northwest Ordinance, Ohio became the 17th state in 1803. It grew into an industrial powerhouse in steel, rubber and manufacturing, and is the birthplace of aviators and astronauts including the Wright brothers and John Glenn.
