New York

New York is a northeastern US state that ranges from the global metropolis of New York City to vast rural uplands and lakes. Its capital is Albany, while New York City is the largest city in the United States and a world center of finance, media and culture. Nicknamed the Empire State, it has long been a gateway for immigrants.

The state spans the dense urban region around New York City and Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, and the Finger Lakes and Great Lakes shores in the west, including Niagara Falls. The climate is humid continental, milder near the coast.

Originally Dutch New Amsterdam, New York became one of the original Thirteen Colonies and the 11th state in 1788. New York City was the first US capital, and Ellis Island welcomed millions of immigrants, shaping the nation.
