New Mexico

New Mexico is a southwestern US state celebrated for its high desert landscapes, vibrant Native American and Hispanic cultures, and distinctive art and cuisine. Its capital is Santa Fe, the oldest state capital in the country, while Albuquerque is the largest city. Nicknamed the Land of Enchantment, it has a singular cultural blend.

New Mexico is mostly high desert and mountains, part of the southern Rocky Mountains and the Colorado Plateau, with the Rio Grande flowing through its center. Mesas, canyons and white gypsum dunes mark the terrain. The climate is arid and sunny.

New Mexico's culture fuses Native American, Spanish colonial and Mexican traditions, evident in its adobe architecture, chile-based cuisine, and thriving art scene in Santa Fe and Taos. It is officially bilingual in practice and deeply rooted in its multicultural heritage.

Long home to Pueblo and other Native peoples and colonized by Spain in the 1500s, New Mexico passed to Mexico and then the US. It became the 47th state in 1912, and in 1945 the first atomic bomb was tested at the Trinity site.
