New Jersey

New Jersey is a densely populated mid-Atlantic state between New York City and Philadelphia, known for its shore, suburbs and industry. Its capital is Trenton, while Newark is the largest city. Nicknamed the Garden State, it is the most densely populated state in the country.

New Jersey ranges from the Atlantic beaches and barrier islands of the Jersey Shore to the Pine Barrens, rolling Piedmont and the Appalachian highlands in the northwest. It sits between two major rivers and metropolitan areas. The climate is humid subtropical to continental.

New Jersey culture is shaped by its position between two great cities, with a strong identity around the Shore, diners, Italian American heritage, and a rich musical legacy from Frank Sinatra to Bruce Springsteen. It is diverse and intensely suburban.

One of the original Thirteen Colonies and a crossroads of the Revolution, New Jersey became the 3rd state in 1787. It industrialized heavily, hosting Thomas Edison's laboratories and becoming a center of manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and commerce.
