New Hampshire

New Hampshire is a small New England state in the northeastern United States, known for its mountains, fall foliage and independent political spirit. Its capital is Concord, while Manchester is the largest city. Nicknamed the Granite State, it holds the first presidential primary in the nation.

New Hampshire features the rugged White Mountains, including Mount Washington with its famously extreme weather, plus forests, lakes and a tiny stretch of Atlantic coast. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and vivid autumns.

New Hampshire prizes self-reliance and limited government, captured in its motto Live Free or Die. Outdoor recreation, skiing, hiking and lake life are central, along with a tradition of town-meeting democracy.

One of the original Thirteen Colonies, New Hampshire was the first to declare independence from Britain and became the 9th state in 1788, casting the decisive vote to ratify the Constitution. Its economy moved from mills to technology and tourism.
