Montana
A State in United States
About Montana
Montana is a large, sparsely populated state in the northwestern United States, nicknamed Big Sky Country for its vast open landscapes. Its capital is Helena, while Billings is the largest city. It spans the northern Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains along the Canadian border.
Western Montana is mountainous, part of the Rocky Mountains and home to Glacier National Park, while the east opens into rolling plains and badlands. The Continental Divide crosses the state, and the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers rise here. The climate is continental, with cold winters.
Montana culture celebrates ranching, the outdoors and a frontier independence. Hunting, fishing, fly-fishing and skiing are central, and Native American heritage remains strong across several reservations.
Home to the Crow, Blackfeet and other peoples, Montana saw fur trading, gold rushes and the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. It became the 41st state in 1889, built on mining, ranching and railroads.
