Michigan

Michigan is a Great Lakes state in the Midwestern United States, the heart of the American automobile industry and a land surrounded by freshwater. Its capital is Lansing, while Detroit is the largest city. Nicknamed the Great Lakes State, it is uniquely split into two peninsulas.

Michigan consists of the Lower Peninsula, shaped like a mitten, and the wilder Upper Peninsula, joined by the Mackinac Bridge. It is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes and has the longest freshwater coastline of any state, with forests, dunes and thousands of inland lakes. Winters are cold and snowy.

Michigan culture is tied to the auto industry centered in Detroit, the birthplace of Motown music, and a strong outdoor tradition of boating, fishing and hunting. College football and a Midwestern work ethic are central to its identity.

Home to the Anishinaabe peoples, Michigan became the 26th state in 1837. Detroit grew into the global capital of car manufacturing in the 20th century, driving the state's economy and culture through booms and downturns.
