Massachusetts

Massachusetts is a New England state in the northeastern United States, a cradle of American history and a global center of education, medicine and technology. Its capital and largest city is Boston. Nicknamed the Bay State, it is home to Harvard and MIT and helped launch the American Revolution.

Massachusetts ranges from the Atlantic beaches and hooked peninsula of Cape Cod in the east to the rolling Berkshire Hills in the west, with the Connecticut River valley between. Greater Boston dominates the east. The climate is humid continental.

Massachusetts blends deep colonial and revolutionary heritage with a powerhouse of universities, hospitals and innovation. It has passionate sports fans, a strong literary and intellectual tradition, and historic seaports.

The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620, and Massachusetts became a center of revolution with events like the Boston Tea Party and the battles of Lexington and Concord. It was one of the original Thirteen Colonies and the 6th state in 1788.
