New Zealand, or Aotearoa in Māori, is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It comprises two large landmasses, the North Island and the South Island, as well as numerous smaller islands.

Characterized by diverse landscapes, New Zealand features volcanic areas, glaciers, fjords, mountains, and extensive coastlines. The North Island is known for its geothermal activity and beaches, while the South Island is dominated by the Southern Alps mountain range.

New Zealand's culture is a blend of Māori traditions and European (primarily British) influences. This fusion is evident in its arts, language, cuisine, and social customs a deep respect for the natural environment is also a significant cultural aspect.

The first inhabitants of New Zealand were the Māori people, who arrived around the 13th century. European exploration began in the 17th century, with significant British settlement following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. New Zealand became a dominion in 1907 and gained full legislative independence in 1947.
