Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, is a landlocked country in Central Asia known for its dramatic mountainous terrain, nomadic heritage, and vibrant cultural traditions.

Located between Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south, and China to the east, Kyrgyzstan is dominated by the Tien Shan mountain range, which covers about 80% of the country. The landscape features deep valleys, alpine lakes such as Issyk‑Kul (the world's second‑largest saline lake), glaciers, and high plateaus.

Kyrgyz culture reflects a blend of nomadic traditions and Soviet influences. Traditional practices include horseback games like kok‑boru, felt‑making, and yurt (boz‑uk) dwelling. Music features the komuz (three‑string lute) and epic storytelling (manas). Cuisine highlights dishes such as beshbarmak, plov, and kumis (fermented mare's milk).

The region was part of ancient Silk Road routes and inhabited by various Turkic tribes. It became part of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, later the Khanate of Kokand, and was annexed by the Russian Empire in the 19th century. As a Soviet republic from 1936, Kyrgyzstan gained independence on 31 August 1991, navigating a transition to a market economy and a multi‑party political system.
